Il Palio del Daino di Mondaino (RN), which this year will take place from 20 to 23 August, is one of the most fascinating national events of its kind, recognized fully by the European Consortium Pageants grazie alla straordinaria meticolosità con cui vengono curati i singoli dettagli. L’accurata precisione che ripropone fedelmente la vita del passato, studiata fin nei più piccoli particolari, coinvolge a tal punto i visitatori da trasportarli indietro nel tempo fino ai secoli della signoria malatestiana facendo rivivere loro l’atmosfera e le emozioni di quel burrascoso e intenso periodo storico a cavallo tra Basso Medioevo e Rinascimento. Fu un’epoca dominata, nelle terre di confine tra Romagna e Marche, dalle aspre contese tra le più importanti famiglie del tempo i Malatesta e i Montefeltro perennemente in conflitto tra loro per il dominio del territorio. Nel novembre del 1459 avvenne un fatto di straordinaria importanza che vide come protagonisti Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta e Federico da Montefeltro che siglarono un importante accordo di pace per far cessare le lotte continue che imperversavano in quei luoghi. Il patto venne sottoscritto nei pressi di Mondaino, importante roccaforte malatestiana situata in un punto di grande valore strategico sui colli racchiusi tra le valli dei fiumi Conca e Foglia. La popolazione locale accolse con gioia e tripudio la tanto sospirata pace abbandonandosi a festeggiamenti, giochi e abbondanti libagioni che vengono rivissuti oggi, ad oltre cinque secoli e mezzo di distanza, grazie a questa manifestazione resa pressoché unica dalla ricchezza e dalla ricerca filologica che ricostruiscono minuziosamente ogni aspetto della vita del tempo.

The first historical evidence of this town date back to Roman times, and coincide with a temple dedicated to Diana, Goddess of the hunt and protector of the Woods, probably as a sign of gratitude for the abundance of game, especially deer, which characterized that site.
