L'Affruntata or "the meeting", is a sacred representation which is held according to ancient tradition just before midday on Easter Sunday.
The representation takes place along the main street of Vibo Valentia and represents the meeting between the Madonna and the Risen Christ, favored by Saint John. The crucial moment is that of the so-called "sbilazioni" (the unveiling), in which the Madonna veiled in mourning goes to meet Christ and when she recognizes that her son has risen, she loses the black veil and becomes glorious. The sacred representation is curated by the Archconfraternity of S. Rarancio and San Giovanni Battista which resides in the church of the Rosario in Vibo Valentia where the three protagonist statues are located.
