Rebuked by his sister Titina, because the protagonists of his comedies were always male, Eduardo wrote, for her, Filumena Marturano, a comedy in three acts, performed for the first time at the Politeama theater in Naples in 1946. She would have been the only female protagonist of the Edwardian theatre. It is the story of a stubborn, determined, illiterate mother who intends to realize her life's dream, a family. For this reason, he does not hesitate to stand against everything and everyone. Medea in reverse, Filumena does not sacrifice her children, on the contrary, she fights to ensure their stability and dignity. The story revolves around three young people without a surname. This cannot help but make us think of Eduardo's suffering, due to his condition as the illegitimate son of Edoardo Scarpetta, together with his brothers Peppino and Titina. To the reason of the written law, Filumena opposes the reason of the heart. The first "quarrel" between justice and legality comes into focus, a theme very dear to the Author, which he will take up again later with "the mayor of Rione Sanità". Filumena's tears, at the end of the comedy, seal this masterpiece, "the dearest of my creatures", as the great Neapolitan author liked to define her.
